Vico del Gargano (up to 1862 Call Vico) is nicknamed the "village of love". Its frazione San Menaio is a renowned seaside resort. The municipal territory has an altitude range accentuated (from 0 to 782 m a.s.l.), from the heights submontane the Foresta Umbra, the beaches of San Menaio and Calenella. The landscape in the interior is typical of the woods of beech and fir trees, along the coast there are forests of pines of aleppo (Pineta Marzini). Widespread olive groves and agrumaie by spectacular terraces on the coast. The geology is carsic with numerous and interesting caves also marine. Vico del Gargano constitutes the heart of the Parco Nazionale del Gargano comprising in its territory the majority of the Umbra Forest. Stations and sites of paleolithic and neolithic oncolytic, there are a little everywhere. The inhabited center of today was founded by the legendary commander schiavone Sueripolo in 970 d.C., in proximity of a necropolis of the iron age located on a hill called Tabor by Slavs who came from the east coast of the Adriatic as marauders and conquerors. The Slavs were mingled to residents collected in a single fortified center that was called Vico. The first official document which attests to the presence of a "Castrum Vici" on the Gargano dates back to 1113, when the Normans conquered the Gargano, which built in Vico a first fortress, a castle that will then be enlarged by Frederick II of Swabia in 1240. The period of Enlightenment brought a cultural renewal that culminated with the foundation of the famous Accademia degli excited, the birth of Michelangelo Manicone, innalzameno of the tree of freedom and the construction of the Monumental Cemetery of San Pietro extra Moenia (one of the first in Europe). The Nineteenth century saw the birth and the flourish of the cultivation and marketing of citrus fruit. Flourishing activity up to the mid-twentieth century and today in decline. During the unification of Italy was realistic country and the seat of many bands of partisans Bourbons that, faithful to the Bourbon King, fought to restore the ancient throne. The Foresta Umbra was their base on the Gargano. Among the places of interest certainly deserve a visit to the Church of the Carmine, with the annexd convent, founded in the year 1603, and the Castle: a true symbol of the village, dominant on the picturesque urban composition. Walls encrusted with history, cross vaults, portals defy time again and keep the secret of events that no archive has collected. Today Vico del Gargano is a country especially agriculture. Nevertheless we cannot consider the consolidated tradition of tourism in the municipal territory thanks to the attractiveness represented by the natural beauties and the beaches of San Menaio. The submontana zone occupied by the Foresta Umbra is appreciated by the lovers of hiking and orienteering. The typical dishes are the paposcia, orecchiette with walnuts, the salad of oranges, the capretto al 'ruoto', the fish soup, soups with oil strong, pancotti and the sospiri (sighs).
