Holidays in Bellagio is an ancient history. The first has been the Latin writer Plinio il Giovane (I° century d.C.), which on the promontory possessed well two villas. In the course of the centuries the strategic position at the center of lake Bellagio yields very important and always very contention. In the high Middle Ages Bellagio was dominated from the nearby town of Como, but in 1100 was already a free commune, the seat of the tribunal. In the XIII century Bellagio became part of the Duchy of Milan under the domination of the Visconti family. In Bellagio was assigned the task of defending and monitor the lake, and for this reason was created a magistrate, the captain of the Lario, around the figure of which it formed the "Community of Terre del Lago" in support of the interests of the ordinary lariani, which remained alive for about two centuries. In the sixteenth century, began the Spanish domination that oppressed the Lombardy and Bellagio for about two hundred years: this domination was remembered by Alessandro Manzoni in his famous novel "I Promessi Sposi". In Bellagio remains a witness suggestive of the Spanish domination, the staircase said "Derta" that goes from Guggiate to San Primo. The more recent history of Bellagio, from the napoleonic era to the present day, is linked to the charm of its position and to the increasing importance that recreation and tourism have had from the half of the XVIII century onwards. On the promontory arose many splendid villas immersed in fabulous parks, where the Lombard aristocracy spent long periods of vacation circondandosi of illustrious guests, artists and poets. In the nineteenth century, even though it was still hardly accessible, if not via lake, Bellagio was a true and own court. Toward the middle of the century were opened the first large lussuosissimi, hotels, who competed for elegance and glitz to those of European capitals. The first was the Hotel Bellagio, born in 1825 from the transformation of the old tavern of Abbondio Genazzini, and then subsequently again transformed into the first true hotel del Lario: the Hotel Genazzini. Following the example of this precursor were born in the next few years fantastic hotels in quantity, and many of them are still operating, often owned by the same families then. Practically all the most illustrious personalities of the past two centuries have affixed their name in the golden book of Bellagio: the great musician Franz Listz, for example, he spent a long and enchanted honeymoon with the Countess of Agoult and there he composed some of his music immortal. Were not lacking crowned heads, kings and emperors (Kaiser Wilhelm, Leopold I of Belgium or the Queen Mary of Romania). Many artists and writers as Parini, Manzoni, Tommaso Grossi, Nievo, Stendhal, Flaubert and Marinetti. And in recent years, also numerous movie stars underwent the charm of Bellagio: Clark Gable, Robert Mitchum, Romy Schneider, Philippe Noiret, Al Pacino, Adriano Celentano, Renato Pozzetto, Alberto Sordi, George Lucas, Natalie Portman, Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christensen, Robert De Niro and George Clooney. Bellagio was one of the first Italian tourist localities to become truly international and is never degenerated into a "tourism machine". Has always preserved and still maintains that discrete and shy character, aristocratic but not snob, simple in its refinement, as the hand as a real lady. It has been realized a new exhibition center, the Torre delle Arti, precisely to respond to the new cultural instances. Located in the heart of Bellagio. An ancient medieval tower, restored to accommodate events of different kind: seminars, press conferences, meetings and presentations of books.
