These celebrations have their origin in the XVII century, when, on 23 August 1614, the jurors will decide to add to the Most Holy Savior, already the patron saint of the city, the fellow San Vito as patron. This decision was then approved on 8 September of the same year by the then bishop, Monsignor Marco La Cava. The celebrations, initially held within four days prior to 15 June, were subsequently moved between the penultimate and the last week of August. Traditionally the feast opens with the proclamation, a procession in seventeenth-century dresses that winds through the streets of the city, and carries out the stops to allow the herald of proclaiming the announcement. In the days following the announcement is the Historic Procession-ideal living pictures illustrating the story of San Vito and its modest educators and Crescenzia (Sts. The peasants accendevano of fires, a propitiatory purpose before the winter solstice, in honor of the Faun; associated to the fertility of the earth. On the evening of 7 December the priest blesses the bonfire that will give light to the Faugni. The tour of the faugni ends in Piazza del Duomo, where the bundles of reeds ardent form a great bonfire. The procession is very festive, and sees proceed the Faugni (that sometimes can even reach 100) for the streets of the village, becoming true "rivers" of fire. Over the centuries the original pagan rite has been mixed with the Catholic feast for the Immaculate Conception of Mary, for whom today the procession of the burners and the great bonfire in front of the Cathedral are followed by the celebration of the mass in the morning in honor of the Madonna. Between 18 and 19 p.m. there is the procession with the statue of the Immaculate, statue dressed of Madonna del 1800, hoisted on a canopy of the same period (the height of the statue might be about 2 m.). In the evening of 8 December, finally, after the procession all concludes with the illumination of the two pupae, dummies from likenesses for women which are animated by two people hiding in the hollow interior of the phantoms. Pupae dance at the sound of the music of the band and illuminate fireworks display. After This pyrotechnical spectacle, from earth, launched by special machinery in wood that brighten up the night sky and give appointment to the next year. Add to calendar 2018-03-25 2018-04-02 Europe/Rome Holy Week Are very followed in the island the religious events linked to the period of Holy Week before Easter; very evocative, among these, the Procession of the Apostles of the Holy Thursday and the Procession of the Mysteries of the Holy Friday. The Procession of the "Apostles Hooded" è organised by the Archconfraternity of whites, founded in 1581 by Cardinal Innico d'Avalos d'Aragona. At the end of the celebration of the washing of the feet, the twelve "apostles" (with the garment of the confrere) incappucciano and with a cross on the shoulder and a crown of thorns on the head parade in procession through the streets of the island, preceded by "Centurion", and followed by the masters of ceremonies and other confreres. The culminating moment of the rites of the week is found in any case in the procession of the Mysteries of the morning of Fridayì holy, sometimes also referred to as the procession of the dead Christ. The origins of the rite risalirebbero at the end of the XVI century, organized by the Brotherhood of the Blues (founded in 1629 by the Jesuits) since the second half of the Seventeenth century, period from which it draws its main characters. Up to the half of the XVIII century was essentially a procession of flagellanti, transformed by then in a procession exclusively of mysteries, floats of religious character. The characterizing portion of the procession, in addition to the participation almost "total" of the population on the island, è also the presence next to the so-called "Mysteries fixed" used every year and from different churches on the island, also of mysteries "variable" or "furniture", prepared each year by individuals or associations artistic works of the island, brought to arms by young clothes of the classic role as 'confrere of Turchini" for a fixed path, from the most ancient village of Terra Murata up to the port of Marina Grande. Closes the procession with the statue of the Dead Christ by the sculptor Neapolitan Carmine Lantriceni. In the general silence, the sound of the trumpet and drum characterizes the passage of the procession.
    The Mysteries
The Mysteries are allegorical floats of religious character handcrafted from year to year by Procidani, sometimes gathered in artistic schools dedicated. Generally consist of one or more wooden planks (said "bases") long up to 8 meters wide and about 2, on which are arranged the sculptural representations (or better, symbolic interpretations) of steps the Old or New Testament, and in particular of the Passion of Christ. The materials used are generally papier mache, wood, plastic, polystirene, and fabric; typical is the technique of the "mold" which allows to reproduce a three-dimensional object using the papier. Generally during the implementation (which Può last several months) the mysteries are kept hidden to the public, so that they can be seen for the first time directly during the Procession of Fridayì holy, and often immediately after, in the same day, are immediately removed or even destroyed. Rarely in recent times some of them are kept for some months to make them can be visited by tourists in the summer season. The embodiments are from the classic "Last Supper" up to constructions much moreù complex (both in the meaning that in embodiments). Often the "Mysteries" refer to the architectural and artistic styles of different eras, also thanks to the wide use of colonnades (higher than 4 meters).

Having heard this, Nicola took a bag of gold and threw it overnight through the window of the house of man; with this sum the eldest daughter could marry. The Holy behaved then equally with the other two daughters by saving them from their fate. Precisely in relation to this "miracle" San Nicola is often represented with three coins (or globes) d'oro in hand. The challenge of canaja (from 11 to 13 years), instead, takes its cue from the legend of the "Three children and of the innkeeper". According to one version, the fact would have happened while Nicola went to the Council of Nicea. Stopped at an Osteria, he was presented with a dish based on fish, at least from what he said the innkeeper. Nicola, divinely inspired knew that it was instead of human flesh. Called the innkeeper, expressed his desire to see how it was preserved that "fish". The innkeeper accompanied him at two barrels full of salted meat of three children he killed. Nicola stood in prayer and it is here that the meat is ricomposero and children saltarono blithely out from casks. The prayer of Nicola impelled the innkeeper to conversion, even if in a first time these had tried to hide his wrongdoing. Sirolo

After a few days of prayer, the second Thursdayì of the month is held the second procession, said San Biagio drops from the castle, where the statue is conveyed through an ancient trail, from the castle to the village. This is a procession really particular in so far as the simulacrum of the saint is covered by a red cloth until the arrival to the localityà said Capo Casale: We occurs because the act of passage of the statue between the two parishes of Maratea is something strictly private, as established in 1781 after a quarrel between the two Pastors, in fact the priest who leads the statue not wearing cotta or stola. At Capo Casale The statue is stripped and delivered to the responsibility the mayor, who here delivery to the holy the keys of the city, making it symbolically the maximum authority of Maratea. Immediately after the statue is transported in the church of Santa Maria Maggiore. The second Saturday of May takes the third procession, in which the Silver bust of San Biagio crosses in great pomp the streets of the village. Arrived at the Sunday that follows takes the last procession, said San Biagio back to the castle, where the statue, again covered by red mantle, retraces backward the ancient path to return to the Basilica to the Castle, its habitual seat. As a result of the relocation of the statue in the Basilica, occurs occasionally the phenomenon of manna, already certified in a papal bull of 1562.

In fact, still today, people similarly to that of yesterday plays this cult arboreal though mutated in meaning and function. The feast of Mascio is articulated in three phases that mark the principal moments of complex scenic action-ceremonial. In the first phase is shot a Cerro, standard tree previously identified and recognized the king of the forest. In the second phase is felled another shaft: a holly, chosen among the most wealthy branches and sheets, said top: the Queen de Bosco. The day of slaughter and transport of the top takes place at the same time also the transport of the tree that, meanwhile, has already been deprived of branches and bark. The Cerro or May, is dragged from different pariglie of oxen; while the top is brought into the country with the crown placed on the yoke of two young cows. The transport processional of the two shafts is without doubt the most spectacular and involving and allows anyone to join, with a good dose of participation on the various actions and tensions that the same transport generates. The third step is carried out in the country where the two shafts are triumphantly introduced and welcomed with great joy, expressed from concerts and supply of wine and biscuits to all present. The next day the carriage, the May and the top are engaged one to the other, almost to symbolize a sort of marriage between the two plants. In the morning it plays the part more properly religious and Christian of the procession of the statue of S. Antonio for the main streets of the village. The last stage of the statue is before the convent of S. Francis. In the meantime the may begins to be erected with techniques that use physical work, in this case with the ropes. The afternoon finally takes place the final phase with the climb. Pietrapertosa
